What are hoarding levels?

There are five recognized levels of hoarding, each progressively more severe. Our experienced team is equipped to handle any level with compassion, discretion, and efficiency, ensuring a thorough and respectful cleanup process tailored to each individual’s needs.

Level 1

The least severe level of hoarding behavior characterized by mild clutter in living spaces. Entrances and exits are accessible, with no signs of pests or unsanitary conditions. Slightly disorganized, but generally safe and functional.

Level 2

Moderate clutter including at least one blocked exit, some pest infestations, and odours. Limited space to move around. The resident may show signs of social withdrawal and anxiety over their belongings. Some safety hazards may be present.

Level 3

Moderate to severe clutter significantly affecting living spaces. Obstructed exits and hallways, limited access to most areas. Unhealthy conditions, rodent and insect infestations, and signs of neglect. Serious health and safety risks.

Level 4

Significant clutter often resulting in odours, mould, structural damage, and severe pest infestations. Blocked exits, limited access to essential areas and the presence of hazardous materials. Unsanitary, conditions with obstructed living spaces.

Level 5

Most severe stage with significant structural damage, extensive mold and mildew, hazardous electrical issues, and blocked exits. Inaccessible living spaces, and high risk of pest infestations. This level poses serious health and safety risks.

Hoarded spaces in a house

At 1st Hoarding Cleanup, we recognize that hoarding is not just about clutter; it’s a complex issue affecting individuals and families in profound ways. To support those in need, we’ve developed a comprehensive understanding of the different levels of hoarding. This allows us to tailor our cleanup and intervention strategies to meet the unique challenges presented at each stage.

We’ll explore the five types of hoarding levels, from mild to severe. Each level illustrates how the accumulation of objects can impact a person’s living environment, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. By identifying these levels, we aim to foster compassion, raise awareness, and provide effective solutions for those seeking help.
